We are starting to see an uptick in our office of the number of patients calling in or being seen with cold and flu symptoms.

This happens when the weather turns cooler and we are indoors more and when kids head back to school. The most common virus we are seeing right now is Rhinovirus - a common cold virus. It can cause a sore throat (that feels like strep) and a runny nose. How do we know it isn't strep? Usually with viruses - a sore throat comes from post nasal drip. If you do not have a high fever, if you have a prominent runny nose or sneezing, or a cough, then very likely it isn't strep! The best treatment? Anti-histamines, nasal saline rinses and flonase.

How to get the best information as to what bug you have and what treatment is recommended?

Spotfire! Our rapid PCR test can be really helpful in determining why you or your kiddos are not feeling well. The Spotfire system identifies 15 respiratory pathogens - viruses and bacteria that cause cold symptoms. This tests for Covid, Flu, RSV, whooping cough and other common potential causes for upper respiratory infections. It can give us a better indication if antibiotics are warranted or not. The test is $150 and takes only 15 minutes to run!

We have seen an uptick in covid cases and many who were negative on home testing, but positive on our Spotfire PCR test. Spotfire has much more accuracy in detecting viral infections than home testing.
