Guide to Care: Treatment for the Flu
It is Dr. Brie's Birthday!! We want to recognize her for her amazing 44 years on this earth and the phenomenal things that she has done. She has built a thriving business from the ground up and within those seven years she has created so many fabulous offerings for our members and your health journey. She, along with her family, have created the perfect ranch retreat for her model of work/life balance and has beautiful animals to bond with for comfort and
happiness. In addition to all of that, she is an amazing boss and caregiver. Without this incredible woman on this planet, the world would be a sad place. Happy Birthday, Dr. Brie, we love you and you deserve the best year ever! (44 is her favorite number so it's going to be a great year!!) - With Love, Shannon Burton MA
Back in 2016, when I started Direct Osteopathic Primary Care, I was teaching at Rocky Vista University, and every day I drove to Parker to teach, I couldn't help but think about having a second location there. Fast forward to today, and I'm thrilled to announce that the day has finally arrived!
As many of you know, I moved to the countryside of the eastern plains in April 2022. Given the proximity to Denver, our move allowed me to keep my old life just the way it was. I may drive more, but every day when I return home and look at the view of the mountains, see antelope or a hawk flying, my cup is filled back up. Last year, in doing some practice management and analyzing our member population, I realized that about 20% of our members currently live closer to Parker than to Lakeside! Therefore, starting this year, I now have a cute little room in a counseling office on Main Street in downtown Parker for part time office visits closer to home.
This space allows for the quietude and reflection that deepens my osteopathic treatments. There are backcountry roads and three stop signs between my home and the space. Anyone who does or receives bodywork knows that this facilitates the calm my nervous system needs to do a great treatment and build my own health as well as yours.
Now, you might be wondering if I'll eventually be only in Parker and close Lakeside. The answer is no! The Lakeside office is a long-time labor of love, and the community and support I receive there are precious to me. The Parker office will be more intimate, with no staff or labs, focusing on basic physical exams, minimal testing and, my favorite, face to face visits to chat about your health challenges and goals. My plan is to start with a few Tuesday mornings a month and gradually transition to one full day a week.
Rest assured, the Lakeside office will continue, and I'll be there as long as our building stands. I couldn't leave, especially with our famous local muralist, Jaime Molina’s painting permanently on the wall! For those unfamiliar with his work, check out this Denver Post article: [Link to the article].
I feel blessed to be an osteopathic family physician, practicing from my heart and living in alignment with my goals and values. With the stress of a global pandemic, the aftermath and my own car accident last year, I have certainly re-learned the importance of tending to my own well-being. The small expansion to Parker fills my cup back up. Thank you for your patience and support and for those close to Parker, I look forward to seeing you in my new space!
To schedule with me in Parker or Lakeside, simply text the office or send a secure message in the portal with your preferred time, day and appointment requests.
Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. This guide is designed to provide you with valuable information on understanding and managing the flu effectively. While the flu can be uncomfortable, a combination of proper rest, hydration, and medication can help alleviate symptoms.
There are two main types of influenza (flu) viruses: types A and B. Responsible for seasonal flu epidemics each year, these viruses spread through respiratory droplets and contact with contaminated surfaces. Differentiating from a seasonal cold, the flu typically manifests suddenly with high fever, severe body aches, and fatigue. It's essential to recognize flu symptoms early, as prompt testing can determine if antiviral medicine is necessary.

Treatment for Flu:
During the contagious period, it is advisable to stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever subsides without the use of medication. Recognizing red flag symptoms is crucial, as they warrant immediate medical attention.
Regarding flu vaccination, our office offers this season's flu shots for your convenience. It is recommended to check your insurance coverage or explore www.vaccines.gov for additional options. It's important to note that the flu vaccine does not cause the flu, and its protective effects take approximately two weeks to develop.
